Leica M1 / MD / MDA
Known as "M1", "MD", "MDA"
Where the M3 and M2 were precision photographic instruments for reportage, the M1 (1959–1964) stripped out the rangefinder to create the simplest, cheapest M body for scientific and military photography. The MD (1964) went further still: no rangefinder, no viewfinder window at all — just a bare body designed for use on copy stands, in labs, or behind microscope adaptors where you never compose through the lens anyway. The MDA (1966) added a self-timer and was produced in small numbers.
Together these bodies account for roughly 10,000 units — tiny by M standards — but they reveal that Leica designed the M chassis as a modular platform, not just a premium consumer camera. Collectors value them for their austerity and rarity.
