After the Steel Rim, Leica kept the optical formula and normalized the barrel: standard filter threads, conventional hood. It ran from 1966 to 1995 — one of the longest production runs of any M lens — which makes it the affordable way to the pre-ASPH glow. Wide open it flares and blooms; by f/2.8 it sharpens up. You buy it for the way it misbehaves.
