In the afternoon sunlight of New York City's Central Park in 1962, Diane Arbus encountered Colin Wood, the seven-year-old son of a tennis champion, walking nervously with a plastic hand grenade.

Arbus circled patiently as Wood grew fidgety, until his face contorted into an unforgettable grimace of frantic frustration, fingers tensed in claw-like spasms around the weapon. Shot on 35mm Leica film before Arbus shifted to medium format twin-lens reflex cameras, it remains one of the most unsettling, celebrated portraits of 20th-century American photography.
